Overview
As Technical Director you will be responsible for ensuring that the core technologies and systems are the very best in the industry and that quality and reliability are built into every product. You will work with key technology suppliers and develop a roadmap that ensures the integration of the most appropriate technologies.The role will involve contact with key clients and sales/marketing teams where you will provide support and direction in relation to emerging technologies.
The Role
You will be fully responsible for developing the core technologies and establishing and implementing a technology roadmap for use across all brands and channels to ensure that innovation is at the centre of activitiesSourcing and assessing the most appropriate new technologies and developing relationships with key technology suppliers allowing this to be adopted at the earliest possible opportunity
Setting up processes and resources to facilitate the thorough testing and assessment of new technologies, making recommendations regarding their adoption and then implementing procedures to allow their
integration into products.
You will be working closely with the Innovation and Product Development teams, to guide the adoption and integration of new technology, ensuring that the business launches robust, reliable cutting edge products.
Manage the direction of a team of functional experts, providing specific capabilities across all brands in terms of LEDs, thermal, optical and electronic design and wireless technologies.
• Take responsibility for implementing consistent working methods across all the test and verification facilities and ensure that all relevant standards are always adhered to.
• Ensuring that the test and verification processes are responsive and flexible enabling fully compliant, robust products to market in the shortest possible time frame.
• Managing the interface between your areas of responsibility and the rest of the business to ensure that responsiveness and collaboration are embedded in all product development activities.
• Managing internal and external prototyping resources to allow the development, testing and verification of mechanical, electrical and electronic components and systems.
• Responsibility for the output of all technical data (printed and electronic), ensuring that this is always current and presented in a consistent and coherent format for use by internal and external teams.
• Active participation in relevant external professional organisations and ensuring that the organisation is influential in key decision-making processes
• Involvement with key customers and projects to ensure that the organisation is viewed as an expert partner ultimately providing the best possible lighting solutions.
• Assessing and acting upon suppliers' technical and reliability data to ensure that products provide safe, reliable and high performing solutions.
• Producing thorough technical specifications for core technologies and components (LED, electronics, intelligent controls) to ensure that the requirements and expectations are made clear to both suppliers and the internal product development teams.
• Leading the implementation of a technology update programme and coordinating this with key suppliers and own internal resources to ensure that our products are always using the most current technologies available.
• Assessing both current and new standards of legislation and communicating the key facts to the relevant parts of the business, making recommendations and ensuring that any necessary changes are made to the internal processes.
• Developing the test and verification resource and facilities to allow technology and product developments to be thoroughly assessed, ensuring that problems are identified and rectified at the earliest possible stages.
• Build an effective competence network with industry partners and key suppliers.
• Continuously review industry (and academic) research to acquire new insights, strengthen the Company's knowledge base and competence of the design team and communicate key findings to the rest of the organisation.
• Manage the introduction of new technology and supply partners while working closely alongside the sourcing and factory teams, ensuring that quality and compliance requirements are met.
The Ideal Candidate
• Extensive and proven commercial experience working in the development of lighting solutions.• Full and detailed understanding of LED and associated technologies including design, manufacturing, supply chain and marketing.
• Full understanding of lighting application and intelligent lighting solutions
• Experienced in building, managing and leading a diverse team
• Process driven with the ability to implement and maintain rigorous control
• Passionate about excellent product design, engineering and quality
• Customer focused with excellent commercial / business acumen
• Educated to degree level or above
• Excellent communication style and ability to work at all levels of the organisation and able to speak in front of large groups of people and able to represent the business in internal/external seminars and events.
